NetGalley Update: June 2018

Howdy ho friends, and welcome to this month’s edition of NetGalley Update! If you’re new here, let me fill you in. I’m a NetGalley addict. There, I said it. I have a serious problem with self restraint when it comes to browsing the site, so I’ve been working very hard at trying to restrict taking on new books and working through not only my e-galleys, but my TBR on Goodreads in general. Below you’ll find a cover photo and full synopsis of the four books I added to my list since last month, as well as stats to track my progress on NetGalley and overall TBR. Fun Fact: I have three more e-galleys in an email but I didn’t add them until I was sure I want to read them and cleared out some of the older commitments first. PROGRESS PEOPLE! Ok, here we go…

Book Title: Summerland
Author: Hannu Rajaniemi
Genre: Fantasy, Science Fiction
Pub Date: June 26, 2018

Loss is a thing of the past. Murder is obsolete. Death is just the beginning.

In 1938, death is no longer feared but exploited. Since the discovery of the afterlife, the British Empire has extended its reach into Summerland, a metropolis for the recently deceased.

Yet Britain isn’t the only contender for power in this life and the next. The Soviets have spies in Summerland, and the technology to build their own god.

When SIS agent Rachel White gets a lead on one of the Soviet moles, blowing the whistle puts her hard-earned career at risk. The spy has friends in high places, and she will have to go rogue to bring him in.

But how do you catch a man who’s already dead?

Book Title: The Chrysalis
Author: Brendan Deneen
Genre: Horror Fiction
Pub Date: September 4, 2018

Welcome to the dark side of suburbia.

Barely employed millennials Tom and Jenny Decker have to grow up fast when they lose their cheap Manhattan apartment. Leaving “the city” is hard, but the blow is softened when they stumble upon a surprisingly affordable house in the suburbs.

For Tom, the bills, the mortgage, and Jenny’s unexpected pregnancy add up to terror. He’s not ready for this kind of responsibility.

Then he finds the thing in the basement. It makes him feel like a winner even as it scrambles his senses. A new job soon has him raking in the big bucks–enough that Jenny can start making her entrepreneurial dreams come true.

The Deckers’ dream home conceals more than one deadly secret. As Tom’s obsession with the basement grows, Jenny realizes that to save her family, she must expose everything. Before it destroys them all.

No one ever really wants to grow up…but sometimes behaving like an adult is the only way to survive.

Book Title: I Do Not Trust You
Authors: Laura J. Burns & Melinda Metz
Genres: YA, Suspense, Adventure Fiction
Pub Date: September 11, 2018

Memphis “M” Engle is stubborn to a fault, graced with an almost absurd knowledge of long lost languages and cultures, and a heck of an opponent in a fight. In short: she’s awesome.

Ashwin Sood is a little too posh for her tastes, a member of an ancient cult (which she’s pretty sure counts for more than one strike against him), and has just informed Memphis that her father who she thought was dead isn’t and needs her help.

From the catacombs of Paris to lost temples in the sacred forests, together they crisscross the globe, searching for the pieces of the one thing that might save her father. But the closer they come to saving him—and the more they fall for one another—the closer they get to destroying the world.

Book Title: The Lantern’s Ember
Author: Colleen Houck
Genres: YA, Fantasy Fiction, Romance
Pub Date: September 11, 2018

Welcome to a world where nightmarish creatures reign supreme.

Five hundred years ago, Jack made a deal with the devil. It’s difficult for him to remember much about his mortal days. So, he focuses on fulfilling his sentence as a Lantern—one of the watchmen who guard the portals to the Otherworld, a realm crawling with every nightmarish creature imaginable. Jack has spent centuries jumping from town to town, ensuring that nary a mortal—or not-so-mortal—soul slips past him. That is, until he meets beautiful Ember O’Dare.

Seventeen, stubborn, and a natural-born witch, Ember feels a strong pull to the Otherworld. Undeterred by Jack’s warnings, she crosses into the forbidden plane with the help of a mysterious and debonair vampire—and the chase through a dazzling, dangerous world is on. Jack must do everything in his power to get Ember back where she belongs before both the earthly and unearthly worlds descend into chaos.

  1. Your list of Netgalley books TBR makes me itchy, Chelsea! I can’t stand having more than a few books in my mental queue–let alone an actual list! 🙂

Thanks for another great post. I hadn’t heard of any of these books before and “The Chrysalis” looks especially interesting. Which one will you read first (in the order they’re posted?). Enjoy!
